  1. Babylon 5: for epic story telling and realistic (mostly) space scenes and battles
Firefly: great characters, realistic stories, and once again using real science in shooting space.
I can't really think of a third one at the moment.

  2. Star Trek II will always be at the top of my list
    Firefly
    The Matrix
    Futurama
    Dr. Who
    Empire Strikes Back
    Back to the Future

So many more, but these didn't take any effort to think of.

  3. Silent Running – one of the only space sci-fi films that is actually a good film in its own right, and not just something the geek in me enjoys.

Futurama – it makes me laugh. The highest praise IMO.

The Clangers – back from a time when children's TV was worth watching. Pure nostalgia.

…and IMO Dr Who should def qualify. Many episodes have been space based and is is the guy who travels through space and time, no? Didn't you see the "Voyage of the Damned" episode with the space Titanic? I'm no great Dr Who fan but even I'd concede that was superbly done.

  4. I'll give a big second to Silent Running – very 'now' story, very atmospheric, and had space buggies

2001 & 2010 – Very different, but faithful enough to the books, and great stories.

Sunshine – very underrated Danny Boyle flick, weird and real at the same time.

Honourable mention to Gattaca, and Serenity (still haven't seen Firefly), and the first 3 Trek films.

  5. +Dave MacLeod I tend to see Dr Who more as time-travelling sci-fi than space adventures / opera but it's a question on interpretation I suppose 🙂 I can't say I know much about the show anyway, the few episodes I caught a glimpse of have left me rather disappointed given the hype around it.

But thanks about the Silent Running mention (and +Mike Kerr too), it's not something I've ever heard of so I'll make sure to check it our if I can. 🙂
