I've started listening to more audio books lately, namely since I was notified that Hawking's A Brief History of Time was finally available. It's heavy stuff in some places but it inspired me to seek out more science books.
Right now I'm reading / listening to Dreams of a Final Theory by Steven Weinberg, not a scientist I'd heard of before but interestingly many parts of the book seem to be a plea to keep a project called the Superconducting Super Collider on the agenda. I had never heard of such a project and given that it's mentioned as a similar project to the LHC seemed to indicate that it was never completed. Sure enough the Wikipedia link below shows that it was axed in December 1993.
As much as I'm happy that so much science is happening in Europe, that this project was never brought to completion is a little sad given the sheer scale it was going to be.
