This part of Caen Castle has fascinated me for as long as I can remember. The idea that there once was a tower where now lies shallow ruins yet with a plunging dry moat all around it was always on my mind whenever I would walk across the castle grounds.
After reading some more about the history of it, it turns out the keep got demolished during the revolution and apparently Napoleon once considered having the castle demolished entirely at one point (can the man be even more despicable?)
The long-term reconstruction project (you can see on the photosphere works being carried out to consolidate the north east rampart, and the completed north west rampart also appears) plans to have lights fitted to outline the keep as it once stood when darkness falls. I often wished there was a way to rebuild it altogether but the fact is, little is known for sure how the keep looked like when it was fully standing as there are only few sketches and drawings of the castle in pre-revolution times, and certainly nothing that resembles and contemporary floor plan.

I remember seeing this and feeling sad, but also impressed!
