Who should play Captain Marvel?

Kevin Feige doesn't actually weigh in favour of or against Ronda Rousey getting the role, he just points out that her interest and that of others shows just how popular the character is.

Now I've heard some not so good things about Rousey's abilities as an actress and generally speaking I wouldn't be in favour of her getting the role if it was up to me. However, it would make sense to give the role to someone who has background in martial arts as the role is likely going to be quite demanding. I don't expect her to be portrayed as levitating at all times waving her hands about to shoot energy blasts and do nothing else.

As it happened, my preferred actress for the role, Katheryn Winnick, has a pretty solid background in martial arts as well. Here's what her biography on IMDb says:

Katheryn is an accomplished martial artist, she received her first Black Belt at the ripe old age of 13. After competing in the Canadian Nationals, she proceeded to open several highly-successful Tae Kwon Do schools in and around Toronto. She later trained to become a licensed bodyguard and currently holds a third-degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do, along with a second-degree Black Belt in Karate.

There are other rumored contenders of course. Emily Blunt has denied having been approached for the role, though many believed she's the current favourite for no other apparent reason than she almost played Black Widow. Other names which come up quite often include Charlize Theron, Jessica Chastain or more recently Rebecca Ferguson. However none of these women seem to have a solid background in martial arts, though they have already proved themselves on the silver screen as able to portray "strong female characters".

Apparently the role won't be cast until early 2016 so there's still time to speculate.

  1. I can't see her doing it. She isn't an actress. This is an iconic Character you need to have someone capable of acting the part. We learned from Gina Carano it takes a while. It's not like the Rock (who also took some time) where they are in part actors already.

Saoirse Ronan or Rachel Hurd-Wood,  Dakota Fanning even Emma Watson.

Though if she does well in the next few roles, it could totally be possible.

  2. If she bulked up a bit she could do it. She is the bottom of the list though.

Honestly Saoirse Ronan would be my primary choice.

To me the acting it the important part.

Both Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr are capable of playing Iron Man… but you have to have the right Tony Stark.

Capitan Marvel is the same. You need someone with the acting chops. Rousey might have them.. but it is true. It is a role people want. Lots of actress will be available.

The key is getting the right Carol Danvers,

  3. All the actresses you list, except for Watson are barely past the age of 20 though. I'm not sure a fresh young face would work well for Carol, no matter how good the acting skills.

Regardless, I'm not sure I've ever seen so much hot debate around who to cast for a role.

At this stage it feels like regardless of who Marvel chooses, there will be some disappointment from some fans who have their eyes set on specific actresses.

  4. It is true.

So many people in my life are UFC fans that people seem to think a brawler is ideal to play Superhero.

There is more to a super hero than good grappling and the ability scowl. I suspect marvel will want a 20 something… I personally would like a 30 something.

  5. Marvel's been really good about making sure their actors can actually act.  (The saga around the casting of Steve Rogers is kind of fascinating.)  Personally, I think it's easier to teach an actor to fight than to teach a fighter to act, so I doubt the role would go to someone from a primarily martial arts background.

  6. +Brittany Constable I'm not convinced that's true but that's beside the point. Don't you think it would make sense to give the role to someone who can do both? (again I'm not convinced Rousey can act) It saves time on training, time that the actor can spend on character development or something

  7. +Jean-Loup Rebours-Smith Oh yeah, absolutely both would be ideal.  But I can't think of many actors who would fit into that category (aside from the same damn names that get trotted out every time a female action role comes up, mainly by virtue of the fact that they've done it at least once because people can't picture any other women kicking ass), and given the choice, I know Marvel would rather go with a proven acting talent.

  8. +Brittany Constable yup, hence why I think Kathryn Winnick is the most logical choice. She can not only kick ass but is a talented actress too. The only thing missing is a major Holywood role. Chris Hemsworth didn't have a huge cinema career before he was picked to play Thor for instance.
