This is spot-on, Google needs a department with creative people just to name products.
From a personal experience it's always so frustrating to explain to people that you prefer "the Google version of that product brand you're more familiar with". The two most blatant examples are Hangouts and of course +Google+. I firmly believe G+ would be more popular if it had a different name.
Strangely, +Google Maps seems to be the exception but that's likely because Google was first to provide this service (not really actually but the others were only doing mapping and didn't get big enough to compete)

Google Sucks at Naming Stuff
Yesterday, Google announced YouTube Red. Google, blissfully unaware of what goes on in Incognito Mode, apparently thought that this was a good name for a service. It is not the first time that Google has made flagrantly terrible choices in naming stuff.

So… this is completely tangential to the actual point of the article, but does the fact that "Google Play Services" is for developers mean that I can delete it from my phone?
+Christina Talbott-Clark Umm, no I don't think so. For once, unless your phone is rooted, I don't think you can and I'm pretty sure it's an essential service for a lot of your apps.
There's a reason it often comes up as the one thing that takes up a lot of battery.
That said I'm not an Android developer
Ah, well. Thanks, +Jean-Loup Rebours-Smith.
