The statue of Greyfriars Bobby – Edinburgh

Edinburgh is full of places which attract tourists like flies to sticky paper, but Greyfriars Bobby's statue has got to be one of the top 5 spots in the city. And apparently someone decided at one point that rubbing its nose would bring good fortune and as a result the council has to apply fresh coats of paints regularly, not to mention the damage it does to the metalwork in the long term.

  1. I have never been into the graveyard, but have seen the statue on numerous occasions. The story of Greyfriars Bobby always makes me cry. It's such a touching tale of canine devotion and doubly so, as I fondly remember my dad taking me to see the film, many many moons ago.

  2. I love Edinburgh, it's my favorite place on earth! From the moment I got there the 1st time I felt at home, as if I had lived there in another lifetime. I have a pic of Greyfriars Bobby as my wallpaper on my phone!

  3. +Scottie Land I know, it is good fun & you're very lucky! It's beautiful & the bonus is that it is scary too, I love scary! Last time I was there we went down into Mary Kings Close! Yikes! Never again! Lol! Creepy yes, but the claustrophobic part is what got to me!

  4. +Scottie Land I love going through to Edinburgh. I've always enjoyed immersing myself in history and was delighted when I began my family tree, to find that I have numerous ancestors from Edinburgh and the east coast. The most recent in the not too distant past. Makes Edinburgh even more special for me.

  5. Grn Peepers what about the "freeloaders" who were born here? What exactly is a "freeloader" in your view, is that the people who for whatever reason are at the other end of the economic ladder to you? People with your attitude make my blood boil. As for the Vets, don't join an army.
