Review of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D episode 1×21 – Ragtag

With one more episode to go before season 1 of +Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ends, here are a few thoughts related to this week’s episode Ragtag. As always, careful for spoilers

– It was nice to see a more human side to Ward, though at times it felt a little contradictory but adding more depth to the character is most definitely welcome
– It looks like May is starting to enjoy going undercover, although given how few people seem to work for Cybertek I guess it can’t have been that hard…
– Howling Commandos gadgets, or how to remind the audience that Coulson is a big fan of rare collectible objects. I’m surprised he hasn’t mentioned his Captain America trading cards yet.
– If Garrett was Deathlok v.1 and we know Mike Peterson is Deathlok v.5 should we expect to see the other versions at some point as well?

and now on to more serious stuff

– Skye’s blood: why is it that Raina seem to be able to deduce the alien nature of her blood when Simmons, a highly skilled Bio technician, wasn’t able to determine anything out of the ordinary? It’s not like the Havana facility for Hydra looked to be better equipped than the bus…

However she does talk about hearsay more than biological specifics which leads me to believe that:

1. Skye is Kree. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, it’s the only theory that makes sense to me. With Guardians of the Galaxy looming in the horizon which we know will have Kree in it, it would only make sense that in the season finale someone will be revealed as who they are, and it won’t be of this earth.

2. Raina is also alien, and I’m leaning towards Skrull at this point, though she could also be a Kree. If there is one major plot line the MCU could go towards it’s the Skrull infiltration of earth for further conquest. It could be woven as part of Thanos’ master plan. Remember earth in the Marvel universe is in a “strategically desirable location” in the space wars between races.

3. Garrett is juiced up but might not make it to season 2. The trend for these types of villains is for them to be almost or completely eliminated by season end. We have no word for an official season 2 yet so having a cliffhanger wouldn’t necessarily make sense (although it could be a clue if season 2 had not been announced by the time Beginning of the End airs). So I’m guessing Garrett will have to be put to rest, maybe temporarily, to let the alien plot line take over from season 2.

4. My big question for season 2 though is what happens to S.H.I.E.L.D.? We know Samuel L Jackson is coming back next week, whether it’s as a quick cameo like in 0-8-4 or as a bigger role like Cobbie Smulder’s Maria Hill last week we don’t quite know. I’d like to see an agency like S.W.O.R.D. being formed but I guess we’ll see.
