Review of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode 2×05 – A Hen In The Wolfhouse

This week saw the introduction of Bobbi Morse a.k.a Mockingbird in another fast-paced episode resolving (maybe) old threads while creating new ones. When you can’t wait until the evening to watch the show, you know Marvel is doing something right.

Here’s my review of 2×05 A Hen In The Wolfhouse

There’s so much to talk about, let’s just break it down in my 5 best moments:

5: Skye is an Alien
Well maybe she is, maybe she isn’t. Like everything else they haven’t given a definite answer to that but the plot is definitely heading in that direction. Her father said “Skye” wasn’t her name but he didn’t say what she should be called either. this is the part where Marvel teases with the fans on whether she is a canon character from the Marvel Earth-616 universe or just someone they did in fact completely made up. Time to fire up those theories and let us know who you think Skye really is 🙂

4. The alien writing is a map
At least that’s what Skye claims, and given that she’d just been given the whole debrief on what’s going on with Coulson, if that’s what her instinct tells her, at this point there’s no reason to doubt it.

I’d just like to say “called it” on this one because of all the possible theories, the map one is the one which made most sense to me. Now my original theory is that the map is that of the Kree empire but of course it could be something else more subtle like the map of a genetic code…

The real question is, why can’t Coulson stop himself writing it? Who’s doing the “pushing” and why? On the side effects I would say maybe the fact that Garrett went crazy was because he already was crazy, so whatever the GH-325 does is amplify something dominant within. Coulson has a good heart and because of that I would be very surprised if he did go crazy like Garrett

3. Hydra is looking to manufacture Weapons of Mass Destruction
That in itself isn’t really a surprise given that in Captain America – The First Avenger they were preparing to bomb the sh*t out of the USA and in Winter Soldier they almost eradicated all key S.H.I.E.L.D. figures.
The real problem with Hydra is because of their omnipresence and their ability to brainwash people, it gets difficult to trust just about anyone.

2. Skye’s father and Kraken join forces
I found it a bit cheap that because he randomly slaughtered those two guys in his dark room, The Doctor somehow blames Coulson for all his ills. It’s not like Coulson willfully turned Skye against him or whatever but then that just shows how deranged he is. I couldn’t quite see if something in his face changed when he looked in the mirror while choking Raina so I’m still not sure if he’s human and just insane or something more.

However the fact that he brought the obelisk (which he refers to as “The Diviner”, something I can’t find any reference to … yet) to Whitehall does not bode well for the team, or for the world as a whole for that matter.

1. Mockingbird joins team Coulson
That wasn’t really a surprise at all, it was more a question of when she would show her loyalty to S.H.I.E.L.D. more than anything else. Still it was a pretty awesome introduction and the contrast between her sheer level of confidence and the timid Agent Simmons worked really well to create that tension.

The real fun part was when she was revealed as being Hunter’s crazy ex-wife. I love it when even male banter like this gets woven into the plot like this. The devil is in the details as they say. In the comics Mockingbird is married to Hawkeye for a while, makes you wonder if Hunter ever hunted with a bow 😉

And of course she has some pretty kick ass moves and it’s a credit to Marvel to bring out those strong female characters, especially after last week’s epic fight between May and MayNot. I think the world is ready for that Captain / Miss Marvel movie now so please announce it already!

So what did you guys think of the episode? I can’t wait to see more Mockingbird and I hope she doesn’t get the Hartley treatment, that would be a real shame.
