Sauli Niinistö wins a second term as Finland’s president with 62.7% of votes from the first round of votes
The voting turnout was 69.9% which is quite reasonable for a major election. I had heard Niinistö was quite popular but winning from the first round tells me one of two things. Either his actions as the country’s leader have a high rate of approval or none of the other candidates had enough influence within their respective parties to hope make it to a second round.
What’s most amazing to me is that Niinistö isn’t affiliated with any political party. On the other hand, although she only got 6.9% of the votes the fact that the True Finns (far right) candidate made it to 3rd place is somewhat worrying.
(At the time of writing this I’m not seeing any coverage from the news outlet in English I would normally link from)
