Melrose Abbey, Scottish Borders

At Easter Weekend, the weather was so good, we took this chance to go explore parts of Scotland we’d never been to before. Melrose was one of these places. Being only about an hour south of where we are it wasn’t too long of a drive and the town was very quaint and quiet, it being Easter Sunday and all.

One of the attractions of the town is its ruined Medieval Abbey, which is run by Historic Scotland and was open that day.

Now when you think of places to take stunning photos, a ruin on a sunny day might seem like an ideal location but actually I find it quite challenging. A ruin, whether a church, a castle or whatever else doesn’t always resemble the original structure and will suffer from a lot of broken lines which won’t look like much if photographed the wrong way. But also ruins can be quite large and putting them as the subject mean having perspective to place them in a context that makes sense. I suppose there’s always the small details but a stone next to another stone is hard to highlight. And often what’s interesting isn’t necessarily what remains but how we imagine what has been lost must have looked like.

So with that in mind, feel free to fill in the blanks in your own way:
