Clark Gregg will return to season 6 of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. but…

If you’ve seen my previous post on the exclusive new trailer for season 6 of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. then you know that Clark Gregg has a role to play in it. It’s not Coulson though.

This very short interview with Gregg doesn’t shed much more light on who he’s playing. All we’re getting is a mysterious new character who is not Coulson.

The elephant in the room obviously it’s that he looks like Coulson and therefore there must be a reason for that. The simplest solution is that he’s from an alternate universe. The CW show have (as of the latest episode of The Flash) 221 variations of earth to play with (I’m not sure even Sliders had that many) but in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far it’s all been what’s commonly referred to as Earth 199999, that’s not too say we haven’t caught a glimpse of alternate earths though.

Most notably in season 4 Robbie Reyes Ghost Rider ends up in what appears to be a different world for a time until he returns for the season finale. Similarly, Doctor Strange introduces parallel dimensions like the Dark Dimension where Dormammu lives. Finally we get introduced to the Quantum Realm in Ant Man which is rumoured to play a pivotal in Avengers Endgame.

Is this new character that Gregg plays from another parallel earth or is it something more subtle still? The show runners have surprised us in the past with parallel worlds like the Framework which only ever existed in a computer, I think it’s likely they will come up with something equally crazy to explain this new notCoulson whoever he might be.

Season 6 premieres in the summer of 2019 (exact date TBD)
