Blackness Castle Revisited

Some time ago I posted on Google+ an HDR version of a photograph of Blackness Castle I took back in November 2017. The photo at the time was processed with Luminance HDR, as this is one of the few decent open source HDR software out there. Unfortunately I never was really happy with the results and I could never get Luminance to process the image in a more natural way.

Today I managed to get a free copy of AuroraHDR 2018 and I took the chance to revisit some failed (or disappointing) HDR pictures I attempted before. In case you’re wondering the copy came with this month’s issue of Practical Photography. I don’t often buy photography magazines but sometimes they contain really helpful stuff.

The results of the new edit are below:

I think you’ll agree that this is a far more natural looking photograph. I have a few HDR attempts that are waiting to be processed, or re-processed as the case may be and I’ll be playing with that in the future. Meanwhile, I’ll be curious to know what you think.

Some of you may be familiar with Blackness Castle as I believe it is heavily used in Outlander and also featured in the recent Mary, Queen of Scots blockbuster.
