Bass Rock and The Isle of May

As I often do when searching for older shots to practice editing on, I found those shots of the Bass Rock in my collection which I never edited or shared before. And although they were taken with the older camera, on a pretty sunny day (thus creating high contrast) I figured I’d give it a shot. And I’m glad I did.

For this post I decided to select two shots which I had to clean up quite a bit (lens dust, don’t you love it?!) but in the end turned out really nice. I believe they are both taken from Tantallon Castle outside North Berwick (those were taken over 3 years ago now). The first one shows not only the Bass Rock but you can also see the Isle of May in the background (I had to check as I thought it was the coast of Fife but the orientation can only be May, which until last night I never realised I had a picture of). The Isle of May is the last island in the Firth of Forth before the North Sea opens to its full extent.

The second one is a full zoom onto the Bass Rock itself which gives an idea of the volume of the bird colony living on it as well as the state of the lighthouse, the most modern of the buildings there, the castle and you can just about make out St Baldred’s chapel.

I should point out that it seems rather odd to me, even after all these years living here, that this island does in fact belong to some aristocrat family who have owned it since the 1700s. It would be better off in community or at least council ownership but that’s the way things are around here…
